Best Self-Custody Crypto Card (September 2026)

The best self-custody crypto card in September 2026 is Tria Card, returning 3.92% effective on $1,000/month of US spend. Self-custody here means the card settles from a wallet whose keys you hold, so your balance sits on-chain under your control rather than in an account the issuer holds for you.

This ranking covers only the cards recorded as self-custody in the dataset. Custody is a property of the card, so this changes the card set rather than the tier set, and every tier of a qualifying card stays eligible. The question worth answering on a page like this is whether keeping your keys costs you money, so that figure is computed at three spend levels below rather than asserted.

The ranking, and why

1. Tria Card

3.92% · $39/mo

Computed on the Premium tier at $1,000/month, US.

Tops this list at $1,000/month, and at that spend it also tops the all-cards ranking, so at $1,000/month self-custody costs nothing at all. The 6% headline belongs to the $250/year Premium tier and applies to your first $2,000/month of spend.

Not for: Anyone spending past $2,000/month, where the rate is 1%. Also anyone spending abroad: 3% FX is the highest on this page, and this default view assumes none.

2. ether.fi Cash

3.00% · $30/mo

Computed on the Core tier at $1,000/month, US.

3% in USDC with every fee confirmed at $0 and FX at most 0.5%, the lowest confirmed FX of any card here that also pays a real rate. It holds the same effective rate at $500, $1,000 and $5,000/month, which makes it the steadiest pick on the page.

Not for: Anyone who wants a rate above 3% at the entry tier. The Core band also stops at $2,000/month before loyalty points extend it.

3. Lava Card

3.00% · $30/mo

Computed on the Standard tier at $1,000/month, US.

3% in Bitcoin for US cardholders, no annual fee, no FX fee, and available in more regions than anything else on this page — seven, against ether.fi's two and Tria's one.

Not for: Non-US cardholders expecting the 3%, which is 1% on general spend elsewhere. Rewards pay in BTC rather than a stablecoin.

4. Plasma One

1.34% · $13/mo

Computed on the Core ($199/yr or 20,000 XPL locked) tier at $1,000/month, US.

Plasma states the wallet is a non-custodial smart account with funds held on-chain and keys managed through Privy, and that only you can authorise transactions from it. Deposits land as USDT whatever you send, and idle balance can earn yield through Aave without leaving the app — I measured 4.52% APY in my own account.

Not for: Anyone who wants stable-value rewards, since cashback pays in XPL. Also anyone spending abroad on the free tier: Visa's own fee stacks on Plasma's markup, and I measured the all-in cost at 2.19% on a real transaction.

5. MetaMask Card

1.01% · $10/mo

Computed on the Metal tier at $1,000/month, US.

1% on the free Virtual tier, paid in mUSD, spending straight from a MetaMask wallet you already control. The $199/year Metal tier computes to barely more than the free one at $1,000/month once its fee is amortised.

Not for: Anyone buying Metal for its 3%, which applies to the first $10,000 of annual spend and drops to 1% after.

6. Avici Card

-0.12% · -$1/mo

Computed on the Platinum (Virtual) tier at $1,000/month, US.

Avici pays 0% cashback at every tier, confirmed on its own docs, so it ranks below zero here once the card fee is counted. What it actually offers is a 0% FX markup and a verified 10%-off referral code, neither of which a cashback ranking can show.

Not for: Anyone picking a card by cashback rate. There is no rate on this card at any tier, and the ranking above reflects that rather than omitting it.

How the ranking moves with spend

Effective rate after fees, caps and FX, computed for a US cardholder with no foreign spend. A card appears at a given spend level only where its data supports a computation there.

Which cards are custodial, and what that means for you

KAST, Crypto.com, Coinbase, Bybit, Nexo and Brighty are all custodial: your spending balance is held by the issuer, and you depend on their solvency and their withdrawal policy to get it back. That is a different kind of risk from a poor cashback rate and the engine does not price it, which is exactly why custody gets its own hub rather than a footnote. Gnosis Pay is self-custody and does rank, but as an EU card it stays out of a United States view — switch region in the calculator to see it. The full custody split for every tracked card is on /guides/are-crypto-cards-safe.

Run your own numbers

The calculator runs the full dataset rather than this category, so it is the place to check a different spend, region or foreign-spend share against every card tracked.

At $1,000/month in United States, Tria Card pays the most: $39 back a month — an effective 3.92% — after fees, caps, and FX are priced in.

Every number here comes from the card's own tier data, run through the same math for every card — marketed rate in, real fees and caps out. No card pays to rank higher. Full methodology.

Rewards paid in a volatile asset. The effective rate above does not discount for that asset losing value after you receive it — a real gap, explained at /methodology.

Annual fee and FX shown are for the winning tier at this spend level, not the card's cheapest tier. "—" means the issuer hasn't confirmed that fee — see /data.

FAQ

What is the best self-custody crypto card?

The ranking above computes it live at $1,000/month of US spend from each card's confirmed tier data. Self-custody cards are a minority of the dataset, so the list is short, and one of them pays no cashback at all — it is included and ranked accordingly rather than quietly dropped.

What does self-custody mean on a crypto card?

Your spending balance stays in a wallet whose private keys you hold, and the card draws from it at the point of sale. The practical difference from a custodial card is who can freeze or lose your funds: with self-custody that responsibility is yours, including key backup, and there is no issuer to appeal to if you lose access.

Does choosing self-custody cost you cashback?

It depends on spend, and this page computes the answer at three levels rather than generalising. At one of the three the best self-custody card is also the best card overall, so the answer there is nothing at all. At higher spend a custodial card leads, and the gap is shown as a number.

Which self-custody crypto cards work outside the US?

Lava covers the most ground at seven regions, including the UK, EU, Canada, Australia and Asia-Pacific. ether.fi Cash covers the US and EU, Avici covers the US, Australia, Asia-Pacific and rest-of-world, and Gnosis Pay is EU-only. Switch region in the calculator below to re-rank for where you actually live.
